Rubylite Jewelry on the Internet – What is It?

Aug 22nd, 2010

Obviously rubylite is a red or pink gemstone. But which gemstone? Historical information or properties cannot be found in books or websites authored by gemologists. Contradictory descriptions and definitions are being given by websites selling it.

Ruby

Expensive rubylite loose stones, rings, and pendant necklaces are sometimes listed on websites as rubies. Ruby is the name of the red variety of corundum. Other colors of corundum are sapphires. The rose colored corundum could be called either a pink ruby or a pink sapphire. Both are expensive, well known gemstones. Why would a seller choose to call either a rubylite?

Tourmaline

Other websites include tourmaline in the name or in the description of the rubylite. Rubellite is the accepted name for a pink or red tourmaline. It is also known simply as pink tourmaline. A fine quality deep rosy red rubellite tourmaline is expensive, but not as well known as a ruby.

Garnet

A few sellers add garnet to the rubylite name or description. There are many names for the various kinds of garnets. The rosy red or pink variety is known as rhodolite. It is more expensive than some of the more common red garnets, but not as valuable as a fine ruby.

Quartz

Sellers of gemstone beads and beaded jewelry are also using rubylite. They sometimes identify it as dyed quartz. The beads appear to be lighter colors than the rubylite loose and set stones. They are rose or pink, not red. This jewelry is listed at lower prices. There is a man made quartz that is called ruby quartz, but it looks different from the rubylite beads.

Jade

Other rubylite beads are defined as dyed jade. They look very similar to the beads being marketed as ruby jade. They are dyed a deep red color. This color does not appear to be the same as any of the other stones listed as rubylite.

Most websites do not include any information which identifies the rubylite they sell. The supplier probably did not offer any.

Trade Name

Rubylite is a trade name. What is a gemstone trade name? It is a name given to distinguish a particular quality or variety, or to increase the value. When the name of a more valuable or more popular gemstone is included in the trade name, it is an attempt to increase value. In this case it is obviously ruby. The customer may:

1. Assume that the stone is a variety of ruby.

2. Mentally compare this stone to the more expensive ruby and decide that the price of the rubylite is a bargain.

Is rubylite being used as the trade name for all of these different gemstones? Why is there so much confusion concerning rubylite? Gemstones pass through many hands between the mine and the consumer. Any middleman seller can add the trade name or omit valuable information. Information may be verbal and often not given unless asked. Language interpretation can also create misunderstanding. The website seller may have added the trade name; may have added an incorrect identity; or may have access to no information other than the trade name.

Conclusion

Rubylite is a pretty gemstone. If you buy it, pay what you are willing to spend based only on the beauty of the stone. If the price is high, have the identity of the stone certified by a reliable gemologist.

Trends in Gift Giving – Jewelry a Timeless Favorite

Aug 21st, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In times of rapid change, constants lend comfort to our lives. Since ancient times, jewelry has been one of the most popular gifts to give and to receive, and it still ranks among the top gifts as a universal, particularly pearls and birthstones. Jewelry ranks just beneath flowers as the gift that says “I love you,” and it ranks just above flowers as a gift to convey that the recipient is someone special. A gift of jewelry delights the recipient and evokes a genuine smile.

It’s the Style…

It’s not the price; it’s the style that determines whether your gift of jewelry is received in the same spirit in which it is given. To give jewelry that delights, match the gift to the recipient’s style. Jewelry is one area where you cannot give a gift that you would love to own. Your idea of a fashionable bauble may be another’s idea of junk. Is the intended’s style casual or more formal, traditional or contemporary? You wouldn’t give a Swatch watch to your great-grandmother any more than you would give a diamond tennis bracelet to your Goth niece. Select a compatible style and your gift will stand out among the recipient’s favorites and ensure that the gift never finds its way to the regifting closet.

The Many Faces of Pearls

Any woman over the age of 30 appreciates a fine strand of pearls. They’re elegant, timeless, and suitable for most occasions. Think back to your favorite old movies; most leading ladies wore pearls at some point during the movie.

Pearls are the only gemstone created within another living organism. Natural pearls are grown without any human intervention when a speck of sand or other irritant lodges itself inside an oyster. Deteriorating environmental conditions have rendered natural pearls all but obsolete.

Cultured pearls have quickly filled the void. The only difference between a natural pearl and a cultured pearl is that human intervention is required to place the irritant inside the oyster shell. By controlling the size and shape of the irritant as well as the environmental factors, cultured pearls guarantee greater quality control. You’ll find pearls in many hues ranging from white South Sea pearls to black Tahitian pearls, and covering a lot of territory in between: pink, green, blue and ivory.

Freshwater pearls sport a combination of interesting shapes and hues not usually found in saltwater varieties. Freshwater pearls come from Chinese rivers and lakes where the Hyriopsis cumingi mussels can produce 50 pearls at once. They are usually less expensive than saltwater pearls, but no less elegant than their saltwater counterpart.

Birthstones

Precious and semi-precious gems linked to birthdays date as far back as the 15th century. Unlike today, early birthstones were linked to the signs of the Zodiac instead of to calendar months. Almost everyone appreciates a birthstone, and it shows that you actually put some thought into the gift. Many people believe that wearing their birthstone protects them and brings them good luck. When giving a birthstone as a gift, think beyond rings to bracelets, pendants, earrings, pins and chokers.

The chart below contains the official modern birthstones, as established in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers. Some birthstones have many legends associated with them; you’ll find a brief summary below. This official list applies only to the United States. Several other birthstone lists exist, such as the mystical birthstones, which originated in Tibet and the Ayurvedic birthstones, which originated in India.

Month Birthstone

January Garnet

-Associated with blood, garnet provides victory, protection from injury and health and brings constancy

February Amethyst

-Said to have been worn by St. Valentine, amethyst signifies spirituality and sincerity

March Aquamarine

-The stone of serenity and courage, also associated with water

April Diamond

-Banishes evil, promotes goodness, improves financial situations – the world’s favorite precious gem also signifies pure and eternal love, innocence

May Emerald

-Brings harmony, the stone of life and renewal, love and success

June Pearl

-Purity, chastity and modesty, health and longevity

July Ruby

-Devotion, integrity and success – contentment

August Peridot

-Dignity, success and fame – married happiness

September Sapphire

-Clears the mind and brings prosperity and clear thinking

October Opal

-Happiness, beauty, love, magic – hope

November Topaz

-Brings wisdom and strength of mind, fidelity

December Turquoise

-Good fortune and prosperity

Enclose a card with the gift explaining the meaning of the birthstone. While most people know their birthstone, few know the significance attached to it.

If you want to give jewelry as a gift, but you’re at a loss for what to give, pearls and birthstones provide two safe options that are sure to please and make a lasting impression.

Birthstone Jewelry, Its Meaning & Why It Makes A Great Gift Idea

Aug 19th, 2010

For every calendar month, there is a specific gemstone that serves as a birthstone for individuals born during that month. It is widely believed that these gems are lucky. Not only are birthstones considered to be good fortune, but they also have specific meanings that are often said to reflect a personality trait of the holders.

According to the Jewelry Industry Council in New York City, the following table serves as a guide to each month of the calendar year, it’s coordinating birthstone and meaning:

Month Birthstone Meaning

January Garnet Constancy

February Amethyst Sincerity

March Aquamarine Courage

April Diamond Innocence

May Emerald Love & Success

June Pearl Health & Longevity

July Ruby Contentment

August Peridot Married Happiness

September Sapphire Clear Thinking

October Opal Hope

November Topaz Fidelity

December Turquoise Prosperity

When it comes to birthstone jewelry, there is no better gift to give someone for a truly personalized and thoughtful surprise. Whether it be their own unique birthstone, a sweetheart’s ring featuring both theirs and their spouse’s birthstone or even a piece of jewelry featuring gemstones that coordinate with their children’s birthdates, giving the gift of personalized jewelry shows a lot of creativity.

Shopping for birthstone jewelry can often be difficult, especially if you are on a budget. Certain gemstones, such as a diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald are the most precious and rare of all gems, which also makes them the most expensive. If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot afford a genuine birthstone, you may want to opt for a synthetic gemstone that will give you the look of the real thing without the hefty price tag. The most popular of all synthetic, or imitation, gems is that of the cubic zirconia, which can replicate a genuine diamond or a host of other gemstones.

Almost Diamonds, a popular online retailer specializing in cubic zirconia and genuine gemstones set in sterling silver jewelry, offers a wide range of products for your shopping pleasure. Among them, rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pins and pendants. As the company name suggests, Almost Diamonds specializes in cubic zirconia jewelry, but their inventory also consists of genuine birthstone jewelry set in affordable sterling silver. For those who prefer synthetic gemstones, Almost Diamonds also offers beautiful sterling silver solitaire rings for each calendar month’s birthstone. Among the designs available include a 7mm cubic zirconia birthstone solitaire ring in round, heart and princess cut stones.

When it comes to giving birthstone jewelry to someone special, it’s important to note that you can actually give these types of jewelry gifts on dates other than an actual birthday. Just because it may be known as a birthstone doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t make a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift, Easter surprise or just to let someone know that you are thinking of them. As you are presenting the gift, explain to the recipient that you chose it because it is their birthstone and be sure to mention it’s meaning. When someone sees how much thought and attention you put into choosing a certain piece of jewelry, they will undoubtedly be touched by your selection and will treasure it for years to come.
